In Hinduism there are 3 main GODS or Trimurty - Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver and Shiva is the destroyer or recreater.

Goddess Saraswati is the wife of Lord Brahma. She is the Goddess of knowledge, wisdom, sound and speech, music and art. Saraswati is also part of the Trinity goddesses Lakshmi, Parvati, Saraswati. She represents power and intelligence from which organized creation proceeds.

Children seek the divine goddess’ blessings to excel in studies, become wiser and knowledgeable.

Saraswati Devi is known by many names. One popular name is Vagvadini meaning the Goddess of sound and speech. So Why is she called Vagvadini?

According to Hindu mythology, before the universe was formed there was nothing. Lord Brahma created the universe by creating humans, birds & bees, animals, insects, trees, plants, flowers, fruits - all living beings and air, water, light etc. Entire creation was very beautiful and colourful. He saw everything alive, different from each other with unique size and shape and he was very happy with his creation.

But afterwards he found that while everything was alive and moving, there was a big silence, there was no sound at all. It felt as if there was no life.

Lord Brahma started thinking what to do. He went to consult with Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva and found a solution. He returned to his residence in Brahmalok. As we know Lord Brahma carries a Kamandal, a water pot in one of his hands. He sprinkled around some of the blessed water from his kamandal and a gorgeous lady emerged out of it. She was dressed in pure white, seated on lotus, riding on a beautiful white swan. She was graceful, full of glory. She was carrying a book in one hand and a musical instrument called Veena in another hand. She was the Divine Goddess Saraswati.

Lord Brahma was pleased to see her with Veena. He asked the goddess to create sound using her Veena. As soon as the goddess put her fingers on the strings of Veena and played few notes, soothing sound came. This divine, smooth, sweet sound spread all over and it filled the universe with vital energy or pran. All existing things got the sound. There was sound of flowing water, blowing air, chirping birds, various sounds of animals and human beings. As if the entire universe got a new life, it became live.

This is when Lord Brahma gave the name of Vagvadini to Goddess Saraswati, the creator of sound.

The significance of doing puja of Goddess Saraswati is that she blesses the devotees with sound & speech, intelligence, education in sciences, arts, crafts and skills. Knowledge shines over darkness.
